The Literary Career of W. B. Trites

Author:

Rex, Richard

Credentials:

Richard Rex retired from the University of Utah. He is the author of a collection of Chaucer essays titled The Sins of Madame Eglentyne, as well as Alice Muriel Williamson: The Secret History of an American-English Author and The Literary Career of W. B. Trites. He lives with his wife, Ines, on the Olympic Peninsula, in Port Angeles, Washington.

This book discusses the eight novels by American expatriate author W. B. Trites, who, although highly praised by such contemporaries H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, W. B. Maxwell, Max Beerbohm, L. P. Hartley, and Frank Harris, among others, remains curiously unknown today. His spare style, which pre-dated Hemingway’s by several decades, did not impress publishers accustomed to more expansive prose.

Ernest Hemingway and the Short Story

Author:

Köseman, Zennure

Credentials:

Zennure Köseman is Associate Professor at Inönü University, in Malatya, Turkey. She received her B.A. in English Language and Literature from Hacettepe University. She holds an M.A. in History from Bilkent University, focusing on American, British, and Ottoman histories, and a Ph.D. from Hacettepe University’s American Culture and Literature Department.

Ernest Hemingway pioneered the short story genre by prioritizing economy of prose. He also wrote the shortest short story: his famous six-word “For Sale: Baby Shoes Never Worn!” The whole story embodies these words, which are semantically meaningful. Influenced by Edgar Allan Poe’s “single-effect” theory, each story drives the reader to concentrate on a substantial controlling idea that directs the story from beginning to end.

Civilization, Beyond Our Fall

Author:

Itzkoff, Seymour W.

Credentials:

Seymour W. Itzkoff is Professor Emeritus of Education at Smith College. His professional career began as a cellist in the Hartford Symphony while studying at the University of Hartford. The Korean War found him playing as a cellist in the U.S. Army Piano Trio in Washington D.C for President Harry S Truman at the White House and for General George Marshall at the Pentagon. Itzkoff’s developing interest in philosophy led him to enroll in doctoral studies at Columbia University. During this period, he taught at several public schools in New York and at Hunter and Lehman Colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). He then joined the faculty of Smith College, where he taught for 35 years. His publications include 32 books in various academic fields with a major interest in human evolution and intelligence.

Civilization, Beyond Our Fall explores the realities behind the rise and fall of historic civilizational ideals, especially on the fate of the Western vision. The book begins with the rise, durability, and fall of the historic civilizational profiles of humankind. It continues with the decline of the West, which from our perspective began with World War I and has continued at a faster pace in the 21st century. Itzkoff’s prognosis for the next century or two is one of a dismal world of chaos, war, and deep pessimism throughout the world.

He then pursued graduate studies in philosophy at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany and received his Ph.D. at the University of Paris VIII.
